HastelloyC-4 is an austenitic low carbon nickel-molybdenum-chromium alloy. The main difference between HastelloyC-4 and other earlier developed alloys with similar chemical compositions is the low carbon, silicon, iron, and tungsten content. This chemical composition makes it exhibit excellent stability at 650-1040℃, improve the ability to resist intergranular corrosion, and avoid blade line corrosion sensitivity and weld heat-affected zone corrosion under appropriate manufacturing conditions.

Chemical composition
Nickel (Ni) is the main component of Hastelloy C4 alloy, and its content is a residual, which means that nickel occupies a large proportion in the alloy.
The content range of chromium (Cr) is 14.5 to 17.5%, which provides it with good oxidation resistance, especially in the environment of oxidizing acids such as nitric acid and sulfuric acid, which can maintain the integrity of the material and good mechanical properties.
The content of iron (Fe) is 3.0%, which is an important component of Hastelloy C4 alloy, and the low iron content of Hastelloy C4 is one of its differences compared to other alloys with similar chemical composition.
The content of carbon (C), silicon (Si), manganese (Mn) is low, which is to ensure that the alloy shows good stability in the temperature range of 650-1040℃, improve the ability to resist intergranular corrosion, and avoid the edge line corrosion sensitivity and weld heat affected zone corrosion.
Molybdenum (Mo) content ranges from 14.00 to 17.00%, which is also a key element in Hastelloy C4 alloy, which plays an important role in improving the corrosion resistance and stability of the alloy.
The content of cobalt (Co), titanium (Ti), phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) are respectively limited in order to precisely control the properties of the alloy and ensure its use effect under specific conditions.
Mechanical property
Hastelloy C4 alloys exhibit different mechanical properties at different temperatures. At room temperature, the tensile strength is about 750 MPa, the yield strength is about 340 MPa, and the elongation after fracture is about 45%. At high temperatures (600°C), the tensile strength is about 600 MPa, the yield strength is about 290 MPa, and the elongation after breaking is about 35%. At extreme high temperatures (1000°C), the tensile strength is about 400 MPa, the yield strength is about 250 MPa, and the elongation after fracture is about 25%‌2. These data show that despite the decrease in mechanical properties at high temperatures, Hastelloy C4 alloy still maintains high strength and good ductility, which is suitable for use in extreme environments.
In addition, the fatigue performance of Hastelloy C4 alloy is also an important index to evaluate its long-term stability. At room temperature, the high-cycle fatigue limit is about 380 MPa, and the low-cycle fatigue limit is about 220 MPa. At high temperatures (600°C), the high-cycle fatigue limit is about 300 MPa, and the low-cycle fatigue limit is about 180 MPa. At extreme temperatures (1000°C), the high-cycle fatigue limit is about 220 MPa and the low-cycle fatigue limit is about 150 MPa. These data show that although the fatigue properties of Hastelloy C4 alloy decrease with increasing temperature, it is designed to withstand fatigue over a long period of time and still meets the needs of most industrial applications ‌.
